Accounting
As an accounting major at Point Park, you’ll do the course work required to pass the Certified Public Accountant examination. Plus, you’ll be ready for a variety of careers in the field. Upon graduation, you’ll have the skills and knowledge to begin a career as a tax preparer, a financial analyst, a corporate or public accountant, an Internal Revenue Service special agent or a forensic accountant for the FBI, among others.

Acting
The B.F.A. in acting is a rigorous 129-credit program in stage performance that prepares graduates for a career as a professional actor. Accomplished instructors provide students with an eight-semester training program in Downtown Pittsburgh, a city endowed with a rich, vibrant theatre culture.

Animation & Visual Effects
Students in the animation and visual effects program combine artistic vision and technical skills to transform their wildest imaginations into moving images on the screen. Courses of study include 2-D, 3-D and stop-motion animation, and visual effects for movies and motion graphics. With state-of-the-art facilities and talented faculty, students gain the skills to thrive in their chosen field.

Behavioral Sciences
If you’re a people watcher or if you love popular culture, you’ll be able to pursue your interests in the behavioral sciences major at Point Park University. Our program integrates social work, sociology, psychology, anthropology and social sciences courses to provide a solid balance of insight into the relationships of human beings and their cultures. Students have the opportunity to concentrate in one of three areas: Industrial Social Work, Social Work, and Sociology

Biology
Point Park University’s biological sciences program entails a rigorous course of study. Students in the Bachelor of Science program have the opportunity to concentrate in one of three areas: Molecular/Cellular, Organismal, or Environmental Science. After successfully completing the program, you can pursue advanced degrees in environmental or life science, or develop a meaningful career in biological or environmental sciences.

Bioinformatics
Students at Point Park University who plan to study biological sciences have the opportunity to choose a concentration. The flexibility of the program allows students to experience the breadth of biological sciences with a focused specialty. Students receive a high-quality educational experience with opportunities for research and internships. After the successful completion of a B.S. degree in biology, students can pursue advanced degrees in environmental or life science, or develop a meaningful career in biological or environmental sciences.
Broadcast Production & Media Management
The broadcast production and media management major is one part strong academics, one part insight and one part hands-on experience. In this program, internships are a must, and with so many AM and FM radio stations, television stations and production houses in and around Pittsburgh, they’re easy to find. Classroom and extracurricular activities include commercial, news and script writing; producing, directing and editing for radio/TV; program scheduling and production; and station promotions.

Broadcast Reporting
Can you picture yourself on the evening news? Hear yourself on the radio? You’ll get an opportunity to prepare for careers in broadcasting with our broadcast major, which is one part strong academics, one part insight and one part hands-on experience. You’ll get started within our classes and then move outside into the professional world. Business Management
You have a mind for business. You have a personality that likes to run the show. Consider our business management major. You’ll take a variety of practical and theoretical courses including accounting, marketing, finance and international business. At the same time, you can explore courses in human resources and production/operations. By the time you graduate, you’ll have a broad knowledge base that will prepare you for a variety of positions in the global marketplace. You can choose to concentrate in one of four areas: marketing, international business, entrepreneurship or general management.

Cinema Production
The cinema production major offers a hand-on education in filmmaking, with collaboration at its core. In our production-focused degree programs, students begin producing creative work day one using state-of-the-art equipment, including the latest cameras and editing systems. The cinema production major helps students flow seamlessly from the student film set to the professional set, and from the university editing lab to the professional post-production house.

Civil Engineering Technology
Civil engineers plan, design, inspect and rehabilitate the infrastructure upon which our survival depends, as well as protect the public from natural hazards. You can work in the field collecting environmental data, laying out and managing construction, studying traffic flow and inspecting deteriorated facilities. If you prefer the laboratory, you can evaluate material properties and clean drinking water, and treat human and industrial waste. Or you can work in the office with advanced computer software to plan and design malls, industrial parks, buildings, bridges, flood control and transportation facilities. With our leading-edge software, laboratory equipment and course content, you’ll be well prepared for any of these careers.

Creative Writing
Our creative writing and English major offers a series of workshop courses in which students focus on practicing and refining their craft. The seminars, from introductory to advanced, are based on the production of creative work and constructive feedback from faculty and fellow students. The workshops are the hallmark of Point Park’s writing program and are designed specifically for the University’s creative student population. Point Park offers students rich opportunities for practical experience. In addition to the craft-oriented workshops, the University hosts a literary artists club and regularly welcomes nationally-known authors to lecture and work with its writing students.

Criminal Justice
Point Park University’s criminal justice major is based upon the enforcement of the law, detection of crimes, investigation of crimes, prosecution of offenders and eventual sentencing of individuals convicted in the criminal justice system. Unlike many other criminal justice programs which are centered in psychology or sociology, Point Park’s criminal justice curriculum is based upon the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act and integrates social sciences, behavioral sciences and humanities as part of its interdisciplinary program.

Dance
As a dance student at Point Park University, you engage in rigorous training in state-of-the-art facilities — the George Rowland White Performance Center and Pittsburgh Playhouse — progressing to the highest level of performance in order to achieve success in your career. This comprehensive dance program connects classical conservatory training to a forward-thinking dance world, so you are prepared to excel as a professional dancer, choreographer or teacher. Our dance alumni are performing in regional and national dance companies, Broadway shows and tours, as well as creating and performing their own work around the world. Students may select ballet, jazz or modern as the focus of your studies, but you also train and gain expertise in the other two concentrations.

Economics & Finance
Point Park University’s Bachelor of Science in economics and finance program is directly relevant for students who are preparing to enter the marketplace and wish to understand the implications of economic and financial events on their lives. You’ll become an expert at using and analyzing case studies, as well as using scenario-building techniques for decision-making purposes. You’ll master the ideas pertaining to technological innovations, growth models and social issues. The international dimensions of this economics degree will enable students to better understand the realities of the global marketplace and the economic and financial events of our times.

Early in Point Park’s education program you’re in the classroom, teaching, in variety of settings, including private, public, early education, elementary or high school. Electrical Engineering
This program combines rigorous theoretical study with practical, hands-on experience. Students will thrive in an environment of challenging courses, caring and experienced faculty and small class sizes. Students gain a solid theoretical foundation of mathematics and science as the basis for their study of required technical courses in electric circuits, analog and digital electronics, linear systems and electrical power.

Engineering Management (4+1)
At Point Park University, engineering majors who are interested in pursuing management positions in the engineering field have the opportunity to earn both a B.S. degree in their current engineering field of study — and a Master of Science in engineering management — in five years with the integrated 4+1 program. Students accepted into the program will take six to nine credits during their second semester of senior year – and be admitted into the M.S. program upon successful completion of the graduate courses. The remaining 21 to 24 graduate courses will be completed during the fifth year of study.
English
This program will teach you to communicate clearly, effectively and persuasively in the written and spoken word. With a major in English, you’ll analyze and understand great literary works of the past and present, which will expand your knowledge of human emotion and experience. Also, you’ll take courses in expository writing, literary criticism and a wide variety of literature subjects.

Environmental Journalism
The new program — made possible through a grant from The Heinz Endowments — provides the core foundation of journalism and environmental science training and hands-on experience via a partnership with Point Park’s School of Communication and Department of Natural Sciences and Engineering Technology. Additionally, this distinctive new program seeks to lead and engage the broader community in discussions about the need for reliable reporting on environmental issues, and stimulate quality work from existing journalists by serving as a resource and driver for change.

Environmental Studies
This interdisciplinary degree program is intended to provide students with an understanding of the complex nature of environmental problems and their solutions. Offered in an accelerated format, the degree can be completed in as little as 11 months. The program prepares graduates to function as environmental professionals in industry, regulatory agencies and non-profit organizations.

Forensic Science
Our forensic science degree program will prepare you for work in most sections of the forensic laboratory. You’ll be immersed in the world of drugs, arson, toxicology, death investigations and DNA evidence. Course work is not for the faint of heart and includes an exploration of accidental deaths and suicide, crime scene photography, forensic autopsy photography, micro and specialty photography, National Database Systems relating to mortality and morbidity, and collecting trace evidence like hair, fiber, glass and paint.

Funeral Service
There are three different avenues you can take for our funeral service degree program. Two capstone programs, requiring one year of study, are offered for students with a degree from mortuary school. Or, in cooperation with the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, Point Park offers a Bachelor of Science degree requiring three years of study at Point Park and one year at PIMS. Funeral service students can choose to concentrate in Environmental Health or Business Administration.

Global Cultural Studies
To make a difference in the global community, you have to understand the global community. Our humanities-based, cross-disciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree in global cultural studies will give you an understanding of the complexities of the world, along with the critical thinking and communication skills needed to make agile, confident and informed decisions. Studying in an international city like Pittsburgh, Point Park University students learn from faculty who work with global companies and organizations. Our students also have access to experts on global and social issues through various speakers series.

History
As a history major, your course work will emphasize U.S. and world history, economics and political science, as well as a range of general college electives that focus on career preparation, journalism or pre-law. History students at Point Park University also have access to an array of world-class museums and national historical sites in Pittsburgh and the region, including the Senator John Heinz History Center, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Fort Pitt Museum, Fort Necessity, Fort Ligonier, Meadowcroft (the oldest site of human habitation in North America) and more.

Human Resource Management
The human resources major at Point Park University in Downtown Pittsburgh will give you a solid background in psychology, business, sociology and education — and prepare you for a variety of HR-related professions. Your courses will emphasize an interdisciplinary understanding of employee needs, selection and placement, and training and development. You’ll also be trained in personnel management, leadership, adult development, computer applications, work-place regulations, compensation and benefits, organizational behavior and labor and industrial relations.

Information Technology
Information technology is consistently ranked as a career field in high demand. With a strong focus on entrepreneurship and technological business solutions, we will give you the tool building skills you’ll need to work for a large organization — or start your own company. You will learn programming and other technical skills in our program while having hands-on opportunities and access to the latest tools in the field. Our program also has a strong emphasis on big data, in which you will learn how to generate and interpret a wide variety of business metrics in order to provide valuable information and insight for organizational leaders to make key business decisions.

Instructional Studies
Our Bachelor of Arts degree program in instructional studies is a useful alternative to the teacher certification curricula. Two sequences, Pre-Kindergarten through grade four and grades four through eighth, are available. Point Park’s instructional studies program is intended for students who have a strong interest in the field of education, but are seeking opportunities that would not require formal state certification.

Intelligence and National Security
Point Park University’s intelligence and national security degree program is one of only three of its type in the country. Our major uses broad course work to prepare you for entry-level career opportunities in homeland security.

Language skills, critical thinking, analytical skills, strategic thinking, ethical behavior — all are necessary and woven throughout the curriculum. Intelligence and national security majors meet professionals from local federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies while being taught by adjunct professors who work for these agencies.

Interdisciplinary Studies
Interdisciplinary designed majors actively design their own curriculum combining two or three disciplines. Each discipline is brought into concert through a topical area of concentration, and students work closely with advisors to accomplish their academic goals. Students complete senior projects that demonstrate the intersection of theory and application in their field of interest.

Journalism
As a journalism major, you’re in for some intense classes in writing, editing, multimedia, video, reporting and interviewing. You will learn to write on deadline in courses that cover all aspects of journalism, such as feature writing, magazine writing and investigative reporting. You’ll create stories for online magazines, print magazines, print newspapers, online newspapers and any other outlet you can think of.

Legal Studies
The legal studies major is geared toward traditional and transfer students who bring a wide range of credits to Point Park. Our program provides a cosmopolitan, liberal arts background focused on critical thinking, logical argumentation, the interpretation of complex issues and the fundamental principles that animate the life of a democratic society. Students attend classes taught by judges, attorneys and government officials and have the opportunity to walk to the courthouse to observe civil and criminal proceedings in progress.

Liberal Studies
The liberal studies program provides an integrated curriculum for undergraduates with unique goals not necessarily met by more traditional majors. Students synthesize an area of focus out of two or more areas of concentration including Applied Arts, International Studies, Information Techonology, and Public Administration, and in the spirit of the liberal arts, are exposed to a breadth and depth of research and course work. A program for the individually minded, creative student, it brings together disciplines, integrates inquiry and pioneers academic focus by opening new horizons of thought and understanding.

Mass Communication
You will complete the media basics, and then sample from the most enticing courses and experiences throughout the School of Communication. You might complete video production and web design projects, take copywriting and social media marketing courses and study journalism subjects, such as feature writing and investigative reporting. This versatile major is especially accessible for students transferring to Point Park with significant college work already under their belts and for students who plan to take part in extensive international study and travel.

Mechanical Engineering

Multimedia
You want a program that combines your love for technology and the flexibility to learn the multiple skills you need today to have a successful career in multimedia. Our multimedia major includes classes in a rich variety of new technologies and traditional storytelling to teach you to be adept at graphic design, web design, digital photography and audio and video technology. Students can select either graphic design or any of several multimedia concentrations, including radio production, social media, reporting, and more.

Photography
The B.F.A. in photography program is dedicated to photographers and artists, students and scholars, creating and interpreting the world of the visual image. Students will have the opportunity to pursue fine art, fashion, landscape, still life, portraiture, photojournalism and other specialized topics. Photography courses are grounded in the creative and technological skills of the medium so that students can gain an understanding of the professional world through classes, internships and networking opportunities.

Photojournalism
Our program will expose you to a variety of photography, writing, reporting, design and multimedia courses, and you will learn how to effectively combine words and visuals. You can work on the student-run media and departmental publications and office, and publish your work regionally and nationally through the Point Park News Service. Freelance, volunteer and internship opportunities are plentiful at local newspapers, magazines, photography studios, production houses, advertising agencies, public relations firms, hospitals, museums and nonprofit organizations.

Political Science
With a major in political science, you have the flexibility to design a degree to meet your specific needs and prepare you either for law school or a career in government, journalism, business or education. Pre-Medical & Pre-Professional Studies
The pre-med major builds upon the University’s long-standing biological sciences degree programs. Accepted pre-med studies students receive targeted guidance, including hands-on preparation for the MCAT/GRE and similar exams, from experienced faculty who take a personal interest in each and every student.

Psychology
Our psychology major offers rigorous study of human science psychology that includes existential, cross-cultural, depth psychology and post-structuralist theories. We encourage critical and holistic thinking in order to respectfully address the diverse and unique lived experiences of children and adults, and foster activist perspectives that enhance the well-being of persons and their communities. Students also have the opportunity to choose concentrations of study in the areas of clinical, child, community, forensic, or religion & spirituality psychology. Our psychology majors have opportunities to work with faculty on original research and publish their work in professional journals. They also participate in internships and practicums at local agencies, many of which are within walking distance of campus.

Public Relations and Advertising
Today’s workplace demands professionals who can think critically, write clearly and work effectively as part of a team. In this program, you’ll explore both PR and advertising, then specialize if you choose. Starting in your freshman year, you’ll take classes with professionals who are connected to the region’s leading media companies and agencies. You’ll stretch your mind and get hands-on training in four years of fascinating, intense courses. You’ll join professional organizations and consider internship opportunities in Pittsburgh and beyond.

Screenwriting
The screenwriting program emphasizes a balance of hands-on work in the development of scripts along with the study and theory of storytelling. Screenwriters participate in workshop settings, providing and receiving feedback from peers and instructors. The program provides opportunities for collaboration with other writers, filmmakers and animators. Screenwriters see their ideas brought to life on the screen and gain intimate knowledge of the industry and its structure. Writers will also have the opportunity to make films, and, by directing actors and composing shots, they can more fully realize the possibilities of visual storytelling.

Sports, Arts and Entertainment Management
This program is among the most innovative programs in the United States. Students earn a Bachelor of Science business degree while focusing their studies in the flourishing industries of sports, arts and entertainment management. This program offers the perfect setting for SAEM majors to network with professionals and land outstanding internships and careers in Pittsburgh and beyond. Taught by practicing professionals, the SAEM major combines a solid background in business, marketing and management with the added expertise in sports, arts and entertainment management. This type of course work is not typically found in undergraduate programs.

Theatre
As one of the top programs of its kind in the nation, our Conservatory of Performing Arts combines hands-on experience and rigorous training with internationally recognized master teachers, directors and choreographers. You will develop your craft working with these professional artists and leave with a resume full of experience in performance, stage-management, or technical theatre and design. You will learn and perform at Point Park University’s Pittsburgh Playhouse, a professional-caliber venue that is home to four companies: The REP (professional theatre company), Conservatory Theatre Company, Conservatory Dance Company, and Playhouse Jr.

Public Administration
Our public administration program will prepare you for a career managing government, nonprofit and public service organizations as well as businesses in the health care, environment and energy industries, just to name a few. Social Justice Studies
This interdisciplinary major not only teaches you to identify social problems, but also prepares you with organizing and advocacy strategies and solutions that can be put into action.
